In the middle of March 2021 I decided to embark on a mini project. Initially just a small warm up painting to get my eye in and keep me grounded for the day I started painting small 10 x 10 studies of chairs around my home. The idea was inspired by the beautiful mustard Ercol I had been painting at Comme Ca Art Gallery. I put this idea out on social media and was soon inundated by photos of people’s gorgeous heirlooms. I am slowly making my way through these images one painting a day fo 51 days.

I think of a favourite chair like a portrait of an individual. Most of us have a favourite chair that will follow us through our lives and in many cases will have been in a family for generations before it arrives with us. It is one of the few pieces of furniture that gets repaired and reupholstered as our homes and tastes change and sees us through so many events in our lives. The chair is the space where we nurse our babies, watch elderly relatives rest and sit together and chat. The chairs we choose, our taste, the requirements we have from a chair, the position in the home we give them all meld to become a portrait of the owner.

I now begin each painting session with a small chair study and am sharing them daily on social media. They are being sent to me from all over the world and when I am ready to stop I will be sending the 5 most ‘liked” to their owners.

I have completed the series of 51 small paintings and will post the winners out. The others are all for sale. They are 10 x 10 cm painted on panels and are £100 each + postage. Please email me to order one.
