alsosketches

I have always sketched. I have sketch books going back to the age of 16 piled high in my studio and I love to look back on them as a memory of what was important to me at the time. Before I returned to art professionally, I used to sit in my apartment in Manchester sketching the view from the window and the New York style iron steps on the outside of the buildings. In 2016 I set up a life drawing class locally and the act of drawing in situ and working on a larger scale, led me to my urban sketching, heading out into the city, or sitting on a beach, with sketchbook in hand recording what I could see.

I try to take my sketchbook with me where ever I go. I love that my young son has taken up this practice too, although he is more likely to be caught imagining Minecraft on the page rather than sketching the view.

The gallery below has some of my recent city and landscape sketches, they allow me to work quickly and heavily influence the way a painting will evolve. I draw quickly, usually with black ink on watercolour paper, which doesn’t allow for mistakes but I enjoy finding a way around a wrong line with a shadowy scribble.

All of my sketches are available to buy. Please get in touch if you would like to buy one and if the one you want is sold I will be happy to sketch a new version for you. While it won’t be exactly the same as the one you have seen, (all my sketches are unique), it will be in a similar composition and you can agree it is what you are looking for before I send it out to you.

Sketches range from £95 to £150 - depending on the size - and come mounted without a frame.
